Tacofino requires no press from me. It’s the single place every Tofino native and tourist alike can agree to eat for lunch. It’s grown from a single taco truck parked behind a surf shop at the edge of the world to a multi-location empire stretching it’s delicious octopus-like tendrils all over the island and mainland. It’s food is always on point, so there is no reason to review it…

But once a year, amidst mountains of bolted, fibrous rejects destined for the compost I get something really right; one vegetable or another fights through my tortuously under-watered and over-acidic wasteland of topsoil and emerges to prove that yes, I can successfully grow something. Dragon’s Tongue Beans with Spicy Pork Sauce

It’s a glorious surprise when you walk through the garden in late August and find a huge bush full of beans when you thought you’d damn near killed them all. I completely forgot about them and never watered them enough! There’s no way… but, yes! There, standing tall and proud in a plastic tote full of chocolaty pudding-like soil, swaying gently in the fennel-scented breeze is a bush sagging under the weight of twenty Dragon’s Tongue beans!
